The Venting Bride: Hair and Makeup Trials

A trial is a key part of your wedding. Why? It gives you peace of mind that you know what you will look like on the day of. It also helps the artist as well to make sure we know what you want and can take notes in order to replicate the look. When coming into the Up Do's For I Do's studio it is important to do a few things for your trials.

1. Bring pictures.  WE LOVE Pictures! It helps us understand your style, or the look that you are trying to go for.  We can take that picture and customize it so that the look is completely yours. If you have a picture of your dress, bring it. It can help us, help you decide on a hair style that will compliment your dress.

2. Be honest. You will not hurt our feelings if you don't like something. This is our profession and we strive everyday to be the best. Telling us what you like and don't like helps the artist accomplish the look you are going for. You are paying for a service and we want you to be thrilled with your look.

3. Get all of your options. Whether it's hair up or hair down, hair accessories to try out, traditional or airbrush makeup, now is the time to gather your facts and make your decision on what will be best for you! Your artist will have recommendations, but that's what they are recommendations. Whatever you decide we are happy to provide. Use this trial time to try out your options to help you make those decisions.

4. Bring someone. We ask that you keep to a minimum on bringing guests into the studio. On busy nights it is difficult to accommodate all of our brides and guests that they bring.  When choosing someone to come with you, it is best if you bring someone who will help you in your decision making.

5. Enjoy the experience!

At Up Do's For I Do's we love trial nights and can't wait to meet you in the studio!

Lindsay

Product of the Week: Must have Makeup Brushes

Assemble a Makeup Brush Kit
From RealSimple.com here are 8 easy steps to putting together the brushes you need for everyday makeup applications. You don't have to spend a fortune on brushes. In fact I have bought some of my brushes at Target.

How To: Assemble a Makeup Brush Kit Step 1
 Time Inc. Studios
1. Pick a powder brush
The powder brush should be soft and fluffy and have a medium dome so the powder is distributed evenly over your face.

2. Pick a blush brush
Your blush brush should have slightly angled bristles and be at least three inches at its longest tip to avoid streaking.

 Time Inc. Studios
3. Pick a foundation brush
The foundation brush can be used as an alternative to your fingers or a sponge for applying liquid foundation; it should be flat and have stiff bristles that allow for sheer coverage.

 Time Inc. Studios
4. Pick a concealer brush
Similar to the foundation brush, the concealer brush should have fine dense bristles that help cover blemishes accurately.

How To: Assmeble a Makeup Brush Kit Step 5
 Time Inc. Studios
5. Choose two eye shadow brushes
A brush with small bristles should be used to apply shadow; a flat brush to blend the shadow.

How To: Assemble a Makeup Brush Kit Step 6
 Time Inc. Studios
6. Pick a brow brush
The eyebrow brush should have a tiny comb on one side and stiff bristles on the other.

Tip: In a pinch, you can use a toothbrush to tame your brows.
How To: Assemble a Makeup Brush Kit Step 7
 Time Inc. Studios
7. Pick an angled brush
Used for applying eye liner or for filling in your eyebrows, a thin stiff-bristled brush provides the most precision.

 Time Inc. Studios
8. Pick a lip brush
For applying lipsticks and glosses, you’ll need a small dense brush.

Product of the Week: Violent Lips

Yep you heard me right...Violent Lips!  What a better way to bling in the New Year with lip appliques. The trend for nail appliques has become a huge hit, why not lips? You can do anything from animal prints to glitter, to even a checkered design.

So easy to put on, why not try them!

Which one would you try?

Product of the Week: Lashes

Every bride dreams of having photo ready eyes. Our number 1 recommendation is to add lashes.

 But what kind of lashes?

It is best to have a trained professional apply your lashes. Your artist has experience with choosing the correct shape, length and application specifically for your eye shape.  The decision for strip or individuals is something you should discuss with your artist during your makeup trial.

Strip lashes (applied one time along the base of your natural lashes):

Product of the Week: Eyeshadow

Shopping for eye shadows can be SO much fun. There are a variety of places to shop and so many colors to choose from.

As a professional makeup artist, one question I get from our mother of the bride/groom's is should I wear shimmer on my eyes?

First, here is a breakdown of the different options of shadow.

Frosted eye shadow: has an opaque finish with a white or silver sparkle. Pastel hues are often frosted eye shadows and usually brighten the eyes. This is typically more suited for younger skin.

Matte eye shadow:  can be used for creating natural looks and they are great for shaping and defining as it is higher in pigment. This type of shadow can be used on all skin types.

Satin eye shadow: (one of my fav's!) this is an eyeshadow that has more sparkle than a matte, but less sparkle then shimmer. This is great for all skin types as well as mature skin.

Shimmer eye shadow:  this is used usually as a highlighter, due to the sheer coverage and a hint of sparkle. If applied correctly this is great for all skin types.

For women with wrinkles or crow's feet you want to avoid the areas around the eye with frosted eye shadows. This will accentuate those areas and draw attention to unwanted areas. It is best to use a satin or shimmer eyeshadow to help open your eyes up but be sure to keep away from trouble areas.  We prefer to use it on the inner crease or brow bone.

Some of my favorite shadows that work well on most skin tones:

M.A.C Shroom (Satin)
M.A.C Haux (Satin)
M.A.C Soft Brown (Matte)
M.A.C  Carbon (Matte)
M.A.C Naked Lunch (Frost)
M.A.C Cranberry (Frost)
M.A.C Nocturnelle (Frost)

The Venting Bride: Veils

Whether you decide to do a church or beach wedding, every bride at least thinks about wearing a veil. Little did I know that there are so many types of veils!  Do you want a birdcage, cathedral length, shoulder length or a blusher (the part of the veil that goes over your face)? It is always a good idea to at least try a few on and see what type you like.

If you are getting married on the beach and worried about the wind blowing your veil all over the place, distracting you from the ceremony, then get veil weights! Yes, they are weights that you add to your veil to keep your lace or tulle veil in place.

Take a look at these classy ladies on their wedding day...

So what type will you wear?

The Venting Bride: Storing your Wedding Dress

Buying your wedding dress is so much fun! Wearing it is even better! After your day is over, what do you do with your dress? I went on a Google search to get my answer :-) I found a great Vogue article by Lisa Gowing. Here are her steps to storing and preserving one of your favorite articles of clothing!

1: DRY CLEAN WITHOUT DELAY
“You need to clean your gown immediately as, over time, stains will set and they will become more and more difficult to remove,” says Gowing. “Ideally, you want someone to drop off your gown while you’re on your honeymoon."

2: WRAP IT UP
“The only way to store your gown long-term is to box it with acid-free tissue paper. Ideally, you want to keep the gown away from anything that could stain it over time so acid-free tissue paper is fantastic and by boxing the gown it seals in the air,” says Gowing. Alternatively, some couture brides frame their gowns and hang them in a 3D shadow box on the wall.

If it is impossible to clean and box the gown prior to the honeymoon, Gowing recommends storing the dress in a 100 per cent cotton garment bag, as plastic cleaning bags don’t allow the garment to breathe. Make sure to hang the dress on a white padded silk coat hanger as opposed to a lacquered wooden coat hanger.

Store veils, accessories and silk shoes with the dress. “I wore a three-metre long veil edged in the same lace as my gown and it’s going to be boxed, as will my silk stole. My sister had shoes made of the same silk and they were wrapped separately then boxed in. Boxing is also a good way to know that everything is all together,” Gowing says.

3: STORE SENSIBLY
“I only deal with natural fabrics, even in my home I tend to gravitate towards cottons, linens, silks and wools, and because they’re all natural you store them quite similarly,” says Gowing. “Store items somewhere that isn’t damp or humid, and out of the sunlight. If we hang a garment under the light in the studio for long enough it will turn yellow as it’s a natural fibre. So store [the boxed dress] under the bed or in the cupboard, and make sure it’s flat.”

Product of the Week: Urban Decay Setting Spray

We don't just wear makeup for an hour...we wear makeup all day.  So how do you keep that foundation, powder, eyeshadow, etc. on all day without smudging? Use Urban Decay's variety of setting sprays.  I like to describe a setting spray as "hairspray" for your face.

As you can see there are different types. I prefer the All Nighter. This spray accommodates more skin types ~ oily, dry and normal.  The spray should be applied after your makeup is completed. It is the last step in your routine.  Hold the bottle about six inches from your face, spray all over. Allow the product to dry before touching up or adding anything to your face. There is no longer a reason to clutter up your purse with compacts to touch up your makeup! Just make sure you finish your look with your Up Do's For I Do's custom lip gloss!!!

Enjoy!
xoxo Lindsay
